In 2000, His Majesty the King, Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa introduced major social and political reforms that ushered in democracy and a bi-cameral

parliament. This epoch making event has had a far-reaching effect in the political, economic and social direction that the country has taken.
Every 16 and 17 December, the country celebrates its National Day to honour not only its independence from Great Britain in 1971, but also to express its gratitude to His Majesty the King for these reforms and the confidence it has generated.
The two days are marked with an air of festivity throughout the length and breadth of the Kingdom. Electrifying fireworks, dazzling laser shows, colourful floats, carnivals and concerts are just some of the events that turn the National Day into an occasion for celebration. Earlier, the National Day was celebrated only once a year, but thanks to the generosity of His Majesty the King, an extra day was added to the National Day celebrations.
For the people of Bahrain, the National Day is not just a holiday to unwind and relax with family and friends, but provides an opportunity to rememberwith gratitude the social and political reforms initiated by the country's wise leadership. It also reminds them of the tremendous responsibility that they share in the task of nation building and in participating in the progress, peace and prosperity of this great land of Bahrain.
